Action Mesothelioma Day 2016 was held on 1st July and is an annual awareness day which aims to highlight the risks associated with asbestos exposure and to encourage donations to help fund research into potential mesothelioma treatments.

Asbestos was widely used between 1950-1980 and recent figures from the Health & Safety Executive suggest that the number of annual deaths in Britain as a result of occupational exposure has increased steeply over the last 50 years. The latest information shows:

  • There were 2,515 mesothelioma deaths in Great Britain in 2014, which was similar to the 2,556 deaths recorded for 2013 and the 2,549 deaths in 2012.
  • The latest projections suggest that there will continue to be around 2,500 deaths per year for the remainder of this decade before annual numbers being to decline.
  • Men who worked in the building industry when asbestos was used extensively are now among those most at risk of mesothelioma.
